WHY MAIL IS SO DENSE

Correspondence records things no system was designed to capture

  • Explanation to an outsider. Writing to a client forces reasoning to be made explicit in a way internal shorthand never does.
  • Negotiation in sequence. Positions move across a thread, and each move usually arrives with a justification.
  • Reversals. People change their minds in email, and say why, which is unusually instructive material.
  • Continuity across everything. Mail spans every system migration the firm has been through and survives all of them.
